“I Don’t Care, I Love It!” an Easy Weekend Look

IMG_1109_editedIt’s the end of the week and MAN was this a long one! I guess settling down from the hustle of traveling the last couple weeks has really taken its toll. I am heading into this weekend with one scheduled event and hopefully a little downtime but no promises I will actually stay still for more than an hour; I do have a 2-year-old.IMG_1117_editedIMG_1105_editedIMG_1150_edited
Earlier this week I posted a quick outfit for summer (here) and this post is similar. It’s a quick mom outfit with a little business in the front and party in the back. The shirt says it all for me, I Don’t Care I Love It! I think you have to create your own unique style and have that attitude. If you love something, wear it and share it!

IMG_1098_editedIMG_1146_editedThis outfit is comfortable, quick, budget friendly, and perfect for the summer. The shirt even has a fun fringe detailing in the back that makes you just want to spin around like a kid! Hope you have a spinning great weekend!

Summer Vacay Outfit – 10 mins!

IMG_0729Summer is flying by this year! We have been traveling a lot the last couple of weekends and it’s been great seeing family and getting to spend more time with mine. Summer is one of my favorites times of the year because so much time is spent by the pool and the beach.IMG_0728_editedWhen we travel, I always try and take quick outfits. The last place I want to be when we are on vacation is in a hotel room getting ready. One way I try and make my outfit fun is with accessorizing. I love novelty bags, big earrings, and crazy shoes.IMG_0717_editedIMG_0785_editedThis look took all of 10 minutes including putting my extra-long hair into braids. Braids are the only way my hair works by the pool or the beach, if not I look like a hot mess. I paired a simple outfit- white shirt with jeans with some bright accessories. The cute little gem of a bag and shoes are from one of my favorite brands for original items, Original Wear. See my other unique items from them here. I matched the turquoise sandals with some beautiful tassel earrings to complete my look.IMG_0753IMG_0769_editedHope your summer vacays consist of more family time and less getting ready! More time for sweet kisses and making memories! What are your quick tips for staying fashionable on vacay?

Work Wardrobe Wednesday: 2

IMG_0569_editedIt’s Wednesday again and time for Work Wardrobe Wednesday. Today I want to talk about a staple item for any career women’s wardrobe. This article of clothing is extremely versatile, fits EVERY BODY shape, and can be worn from day to night.  It’s been around for decades and most recently popularized again by DVF. The wrap dress plays an important part in my wardrobe because it’s quick, comfortable, and has a professional look.

IMG_0558_editedIt’s no secret why Marie Claire named this the most empowering dress ever.” It’s been everywhere from the runway, to the streets, and back. The wrap dress is a true power dress for the modern day career women. For me, it’s the ultimate easy dress. The jersey style is so comfy, requires no ironing, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. It’s also a dress-and-go kinda outfit.

IMG_0555_editedI recently visited Thinking Girls Boutique in Houston and styled this beautiful wrap dress to the AMA Luncheon. You can see my tips for what to wear to a networking lunch here. I kept all my accessories neutral and added some flair with a brightly colored floral sash. It’s simple to change the look of the dress with one prominent accessory.

IMG_0557_editedWith the variety in styles and the way this flatters all women, I doubt this look is going away anytime soon. I am sure it will evolve with the trends and stay current. It’s a nice piece to add to your work wardrobe if you don’t already own one and can guarantee a stress-free morning getting ready.

Some of my favorite styles:

three dots 3/4 Sleeve Wrap Dress • Three Dots • $54

Anne Klein Jersey Faux Wrap Dress • Anne Klein • $99

Clover Canyon Modern Mosaic Wrap Dress • Clover Canyon • $147.60

Eliza J Polka Dot Jersey Faux Wrap Dress (Regular & Petite) • Eliza J • $118

Happy Hump Day Yall!

LBD for OTH!

IMG_7017_editedIt was a milestone birthday for my hubby this year, he turned forty. I remember when thirty was old, now forty seems super young, LOL. I love to throw parties and celebrate birthdays in style but that is not him. He preferred to have dinner, just the two of us, and have a low-key evening. He works in sales and is around people all the time and we have a two-year-old, quiet nights are special.IMG_7042_editedI was trying to decide what to wear for his “over the hill” birthday and of course it had to include black. I love LBD’s because they can be worn for almost any occasion. With this one in particular, I have seriously lowered my cost per wear! I have worn this to a birthday party, a wedding, night out with the girls, a graduation, and now a date night. It’s no secret that the LBD is a classic and versatile item that should be in every girl’s closet.IMG_7044_editedAccessorizing the LBD can change the look of it completely! I wore the dress with my birthday present, my very first pair of Louboutin’s! I was seriously Loca for Louboutins and I finally have a pair of my own! These are not everyday mom on-the-go shoes but do work well for the rare nights out. I added my heart Kate Spade bag and of course a firetruck red lip.IMG_7033_editedMy hubs and I enjoyed our evening together. We did a dinner and show combo downtown. We attempted to have some drinks after but ended up back at home by eleven – even though we were kid-free for the evening. He and I are no longer the night owls we used to be, but still appreciated an evening alone. My fortieth is not for a while but I hope it’s just as entertaining!

My Mom Story

I did a collaboration with Connie from Momma of Dos Blog last month for Mother’s Day and told my motherhood story. I thought it was a little more personal than most things I post but I figured you could learn something new about me.
My name is Val and I am a 35-year old wife, the lucky mom of a princess named Aly, and a native Houstonian. Also, a full-time working mom as well as a blogger at Val Around Town. I am truly grateful for all the blessings in my life especially being able to become a mom. Mother’s Day is right around the corner and I feel extremely fortunate to have my little one. Until it actually happened, I never knew if it was possible and here’s why.

I am a childhood cancer survivor. Not only did I have cancer but it was in the lining of the bladder and uterus (sarcoma botryoides). At only two years old (the age of my daughter now), I went through two years of chemotherapy, surgeries, and radiation to battle this disease. I was very young, but the chance to bear children was considered very slim because you are born with all of your eggs and radiation treatments can affect fertility in many ways.

I always knew I wanted to be a mom (if it was meant to be), though the number of children I wanted to have decreased as I got older (from 10 to 2 to 1, lol). My husband and I had been married a couple of years and we decided to leave it up to destiny. I didn’t even realize I was expecting until my husband begged me to take a pregnancy test because of major fatigue, he said he just knew. I was almost 8 weeks when we found out and given my background was really scared and thankful at the same time.

My pregnancy was not easy and nothing like I had imagined. I thought I would be glowing, eating ice cream with pickles, and loving the feeling of my baby inside of me. That was far from the truth! I was put on partial bed rest at 9 weeks and full at mid-term. I also had complications given my history and one of them was Placenta Previa. Being pregnant for me consisted of swollen feet the size of bricks, heartburn the entire time, and cabin fever. Even though it was rough, it was only 38 weeks of my life and worth every moment even though it didn’t seem like it at the time!

One great benefit about having a C-section is that you have a scheduled date and time to deliver. I went into the hospital, got prepped, and after entering the delivery room had my child in less than 10 minutes. My in-laws had gone downstairs to get coffee and missed my hubby taking Aly to the nursery, it was that quick! The recovery, on the other hand, was quite the contrary.
The first year of motherhood can be challenging. They say the days are long but the years are short and this is SO TRUE! I had a major surgery, had been on bed rest almost 6 months, and gained 41 pounds (Aly was 5lbs when she was born). It was an adjustment for my muscles to be up and walking around again (no joke). Not to mention, trying to live on zero sleep, picking up the baby with the pain of surgery, trying to squeeze in showers, and attempting to produce milk. In the first year, you do what you can to make it through but not to worry, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
If I could give any advice to new moms it would be this:
  • Remember the days will be long but they won’t last forever.
  • Take all the help you can get from relatives and friends.
  • You will never have everything done so enjoy some moments with your baby even if the house is a mess.
  • Meet other new moms- I joined a mom group (this is a great place to ask questions and hear stories and similar situations> it’s like a mini support group and you will need it).
  • Don’t pass judgment on other moms- we are all trying to make it work, what works for you may not for someone else.
Being a mom can be a tiring job but also the most rewarding experience ever. We are in the terrible twos right now so some days are “Mommy I love you to the moon and back” and others are me trying to pick up my screaming toddler from the grocery store floor. Although my pregnancy and the process of giving and birth were not easy, I truly understand Aly was a MIRACLE and I am blessed to have her in my life. My family and life would not be complete without her and there is a “new definition” of love greater than anything I have ever felt! Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!

Off-the-Shoulder is Here to Stay!

It’s no secret that the off-the-shoulder trend is here to stay this season. From the runway to the streets, everyone is styling these flattering tops. This style looks great on most body types and can be worn for just about any occasion. You can wear it mom-style, for a date night, or even to a formal occasion. The simple elegance it creates when exposing the shoulders is just beautiful.

I was watching an episode of friends last week, and Rachel was wearing an off-the-shoulder button up with a tie. It was no surprise to me that this style looked quite familiar. I am probably aging myself by saying this, but I remember this trend being popular more than once in my lifetime. I am really intrigued by the cyclical nature of fashion and seeing how it evolves. There is always a new take or creative way the “new trend” is being worn.

One of my good friends traveled to Guatemala recently and brought me back this gorgeous hand-embroidered off-the-shoulder top. I was super excited about it because I love unique items that have a story and some culture behind them. When I saw she also brought my Bearcat one as well, I was over the moon! It’s getting pretty hot in Texas these days so these were perfect for an afternoon out with my little love.

The most valued treasures in my life are my family. I love the weekends when I am able to spend time with my Alybear and enjoy the outdoors. It’s nice to take a break from the workweek hustle and live life. With the weather being fabulous lately in Texas it makes you want to live outdoors.

We traveled to Rockdale last weekend to attend my nephew’s military themed birthday party. My little one and I had to dress the part, of course! One of my favorite versatile wardrobe pieces are these camouflage pants. They are great with heels (seen here) or can be dressed down for a weekend mom look. I love quick and easy pieces for the weekend and this look is definitely one of them. And it happened to match the theme as well.

What is one of your favorite weekend wardrobe pieces?

Vests: Le Boutique Shop / Boots: Tory Burch / Jeans: Joe Fresh/ Sweater: J Crew / Tank: The Limited / Watch: Daniel Wellington

And so ANOTHER magical holiday season comes to an end! After a jam packed December and traveling abroad to ring in 2016, I am overjoyed to be back in Texas and home with my family. The mom-work routine is in full speed ahead!

I am back in the swing of things and enjoying hanging with my little one. My Bearcat is at such a fun age and loves to be just like her mommy-no complaints there :).  I know this won’t last long so I am taking full advantage; matching our outfits as much as possible, embracing every single second.  It is truly like having a mini-me to dress which is fabulous!

Look at our super cute matching vests.  You all know the vest is my go-to piece for winter in Texas so of course she needed one too. This vest combo is a quick mom outfit perfect for running errands, going to a birthday party, or even to the park. A pattern vest can take a plain outfit to next level by adding that final touch. To complete our looks, I added classic pearls to give it a Jackie ‘O dazzle finish.
Hoping 2016 is treating you amazing!  Are you back into the swing of things yet!??
